
(Yicai Global) Dec. 21 — Nio has received a blackmail notice from the hackers who stole its user data, asking the Chinese new energy vehicle startup to pay them nearly USD2.3 million in bitcoin for not leaking the information.
Nio received the blackmail email on Dec. 11, the Shanghai-based electric vehicle maker said yesterday. The stolen data were basic user information and vehicle sales data collected before August 2021, according to the results of an investigation by the company’s special team.
Nio apologized to related users and promised to take responsibility for the losses of users as a result of the incident.
Nio will not cave in cybercrime, it added, noting that it will work with the law enforcement agency to investigate the matter in depth and resolutely combat related data theft and trading in accordance with the law.
